Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is a fun and interesting way to open up your consciousness and explore your psychic powers.

When we become lucid we achieve self awareness when we would otherwise be unconscious during the REM sleep state. During this period of heightened awareness you can take control of your dreams and explore your fantasies, conquer your fears, and even practice physical and psychic skills.

Imagine practicing for an anticipated athletic event or preparing for a public speech while you sleep. This is possible because your physical brain reacts in exactly the same way during a dream as when you are in the normal waking state of awareness.

Lucid dreaming takes place during the rapid eye movement or REM stage of the sleep cycle. It is during this stage of the sleep cycle that we experience dreams coupled with sleep paralysis.

For the average person this stage occupies between 20 to 25% of the entire sleep cycle. We may experience the REM stage several times during the night. The REM sleep cycle occurs during the theta brainwave cycle. During the theta state one experiences unconscious dreams, lucid dreams, and sometimes even astral projections.

The NREM (non-rapid eye movement) stage of sleep occurs between lapses in the REM sleep cycles. Brain wave frequencies slow down significantly to the Delta level of consciousness. The delta level of consciousness is where most of us unconsciously explore the astral planes. Memory retention of dreams occurring during the NREM stages of sleep is greatly impaired and are significantly more difficult to remember. During the REM (theta) stage of sleep is the optimal time to seize the opportunity to practice lucid dreaming.

Why learn lucid dreaming?

For me, the allure of lucid dreaming is the possibility of adventure. I could spend several hours a night doing something interesting rather than spending that time unconscious. Like astral projection, lucid experiences enable you explore a completely different world.

Through astral travel you can explore the astral plane, but through lucid dreaming you are able to consciously explore your own personal interior world. Exploring the recesses of your mind allows you to gain insight into your own personal strengths and weakness, your beliefs, your fears, and desires.

You may discover that you have been hiding some of these facets from yourself by strong socialization, religious beliefs, and maybe even forgotten memories from past life experiences.

If you suffer from night terrors, lucid dreaming can help you overcome those nightmares by allowing you to consciously face your fears. Some people have persistent dreams of being chased by an unknown pursuer. Being unconscious during this experience, they are left with no choice other than to run on "automatic" and experience this fear.

Lucid Dreaming By taking control you have a choice to stop running and turn around and face your fear. In doing so you will overcome your fears and even find that the thing chasing after you turned into something pleasant or even funny.

Many people seek out lucid dreaming in order to explore their fantasies. You can explore any fantasy that you can imagine without having to worry about social constraints. This gives us the opportunity to explore new possibilities for our physical lives giving us the opportunity to live out our decisions before having to suffer any perceived consequences.

It allows people who have disabilities to have experiences which would not be possible for them in their physical bodies. Because all sensory input occurs in the brain one can experience sight even if their physical eyes are blind, or one can experience sex even if that person had lost lower body feeling due to paralysis.

There is a heightened sense of awareness when lucid which some people describe as transcendent and feel a connection with their higher consciousness. All activities which seek to awaken the consciousness from the previously primordial unconscious state have value to those seeking to awaken their innate psychic abilities.

In short why wouldn't you want to awaken an ability which offers you so much potential?

How to Learn Lucid Dreaming

The basic principle behind lucid dreaming is self awareness. The goal is to realize that you are dreaming and gain the same type of self-awareness as when you are in the waking state while staying in the REM sleep cycle for as long as possible.

This sounds rather easy; however, there are many obstacles to over come. In order to master lucid dreaming you will need to break a life time of habitual unconsciousness and learn to remember the experiences which you had the previous night.

Self awareness opens up many functions of the consciousness. Practicing this invaluable skill will not only teach you how to become a master of your dreams, but also open up other areas of the consciousness allowing to access your psychic powers effortlessly.

Here are some useful pages describing the lucid dreaming techniques which I used to become master of my own dream experiences.

Dream Recall

Dream Recall is an important part of obtaining lucidity during your dream states. Becoming proficient at this skill does several things for you.

  • Improves overall memory
  • Raises your self-awareness
  • Gives you insight into your alternate “quantum realities”
I would recommend that you first learn to recall each and every dream you had during the night. What is the purpose of achieving a lucidity if you cannot even remember the experience?

Once you have done this consistently over a period of a few weeks you can transition into the next phase of learning to lucid dream.

Reality Checks

There are a multitude of techniques to become lucid that focus on reality checks which you can preform through out the day. It doesn't really matter how you preform the check. The important thing is that you do them frequently and consistently, wholeheartedly, and with awareness.

The purpose of reality checks is that you are asking yourself where you are, how did you get there, who you are, and what are you doing.

If you know where you are, but can't remember how you got there, you are probably in a dream.

If you are confused about who you are this could also be an indication that you are in a dream.

Most importantly, is what you are doing. Often times we preform out of the ordinary tasks in dreams. When you find yourself doing something which would be physical impossible, this is also a good indicator that you are in a dream.

Hypnotic Suggestion

Once you have mastered dream recall and are faithfully preforming reality checks, you can start to suggest to your subconscious mind that you will become lucid in a dream. There are a number of ways to do this.

Mantras
Repeat as many times as possible, either aloud or in you mind, that you will become lucid in a dream.

I find it better to “just know” and “feel” the mantra as opposed to repeating the words in my mind, as the words tend to program me to wake up completely when I'm dreaming. This usually leads to me waking up several times a night and losing lots of sleep.

Unexplainable Store's Isochronic Tones
The Unexplainable Store has a great product which actually programs your mind to experience lucidity easier. Even though isochronic tones train your mind to be more conscious during the REM sleep cycle it is still necessary to learn dream recall and continue to do reality checks to maximize your opportunities of success.

Keep in mind that learning to lucid dream is a process of reorienting the mind from the state of unconsciousness to a more conscious state. There may be one (or several) life times of unconscious energy waiting to be transformed.

In the end those that faithfully dedicate themselves to the study of self awareness will prevail sooner rather than later.
